Neonatal Gynecomastia is caused by the passage of maternal hormones through the placenta during pregnancy.When babies are born , these hormones persist for a short time , and their bodies " think" they are reaching puberty. This leads to the enlargement of the breasts . This is seen in male and female infants.

In infants the breast enlargement usually progresses during the first 2 months of life. Also sometimes is observed secretion of the breasts. The breasts should not be red, hot and soft in neonatal gynecomastia. These findings are consistent with other diseases.
Diagnosis is made by physical examination , there are laboratory tests that are needed. No treatment is necessary because the mother 's hormones are out of the baby's bloodstream , so will disappear from the breast tissue. Overall, between 65-90 % of newborns have breast tissue and results of maternal and placental transfer of estrogens and progesterone persists for several months.
The breast enlargement is a normal neonatal to falling levels of maternal estrogen response in late pregnancy . These trigger the release of prolactin from the pituitary of the newborn. This breast enlargement is common in neonatal and regardless of the sex of the baby and is usually bilateral - even if they are not symmetrical.
If it occurs unilaterally then be regarded as a breast abscess also infectious mastitis can occur in a newborn and considered , especially if the infant has malaise, enlarged breasts and has the characteristics of infection (warmth, erythema) . It usually occurs in the first week of life and usually resolves in a few weeks , but may persist for several months.
The breast enlargement liquid can flow which usually resolves without treatment for a few weeks . Squeeze the chest to facilitate discharge but can lead to irritation , enlargement, and the persistence of the hypertrophied tissue , or, in rare cases, infection (mastitis or abscess ) . All these queries must be made by qualified family never for baby to have a correct evaluation of the event staff.
